Cottage Farm
A peaceful and secluded wood along the banks of the River Strule to the north west of Omagh town, this nature reserve is part of a fully operational farm in private ownership.
The woodland flora reveals a lot about its history: the profusion of bluebells and anemones suggest the wood is long established and ancient in origin, whilst specimen exotic trees and small larch plantations represent past human influence. The mammal list includes otter, badger, fox, several bat species and red squirrel. An informal path along the river makes for a pleasant 30-minute stroll. Access: This nature reserve is open to UWT Members only Getting There: Take A5 north from Omagh for 3 miles and turn right along minor road signposted to Gortin. After crossing Knockmoyle Bridge, turn left and continue for a mile to farm. Look out for: autumn fungi, mammal tracks and signs, banded demoiselle (damselfly) and kingfisher.
