Within Living Seas, marine wildlife thrives, from the depths of the ocean to the coastal shallows’

Living Seas’ is the Wildlife Trusts’ vision for the future of UK’ seas and sea life.

Forest kelp and sea beachHere in Northern Ireland, we have a hidden paradise beneath the waves. A hidden paradise with colourful strange habitats, for example sea caves, biogenic reefs and maerl beds, which seem to be from another world. These habitats are home to a wide range of sea life and new species are being discovered all the time. Many species found in our waters, such as scampi, scallop and pollack, are commercially fished and healthy stocks are vital for us to bring back Northern Ireland’s Living Seas.

The Ulster Wildlife Trust is aiming to to work towards a healthy, productive and wildlife-rich future through four Living Seas themes:

  • Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and wildlife
  • Fishing and seafood
  • Marine planning and sustainable development
  • Legislation and Policy
