Translink Biodiversity Project

Introduction to the Project

Bann EstuaryThe Ulster Wildlife Trust and Translink have been working in partnership on a 3-year biodiversity project since summer 2007. The process involves identifying areas of conservation interest across Translink's operations and developing a Biodiversity Action Plan to direct work to conserve these. The project also has a strong component of consciousness-raising within the organisation of issues that impact on biodiversity. It is also anticipated that communities and staff can engage in projects to enhance and improve stations and halts for wildlife and people.

The Trust sees this as a unique opportunity considering that the railway tracksides alone cover 210 miles of corridors largely undisturbed by human activity. There is great potential for positive biodiversity work that will benefit Translink, their passengers, and of course local wildlife! By involving Translink staff and contractors in actions to promote biodiversity on the land, we will be helping to build up awareness of local biodiversity within their organisation.

We hope that through this partnership project, the good example being set by Translink will help to increase the drive for organisations throughout NI to take proactive action for biodiversity.
