Biodiversity in Fermanagh
The Fermanagh Biodiversity Audit confirmed the significant biodiversity resource of the County. 20 out of the 22 terrestrial Northern Ireland priority habitats (91%) occur in Fermanagh, whilst 90 Northern Ireland priority species occur. The rich myriad of habitats and species present is reflected in the amount and extent of protected areas, which are of local, national, European and global importance. The protected or designated areas within Fermanagh consist of 61 Areas of Special Scientific Interest (ASSI), 12 Special Areas for Conservation (SAC), three Special Protected Areas (SPA), five Ramsar sites and one European Geopark.The overall result is a natural environment that has international renown for its wildlife interest. Through regular liaison with the Fermanagh LBAP Steering Group and the Fermanagh LBAP Partnership, a selection of habitats and species were selected upon which to focus conservation efforts and plans are currently being developed to assist in the implementation of these.
