Biodiversity in Fermanagh
Of the 275 priority species that occur in Northern Ireland, 90 occur in Fermanagh (23%). 20 out of 40 Northern Ireland priority habitats also occur in Fermanagh. When you consider that 18 of priority habitats are found in the marine environment, Fermanagh has a remarkably high proportion of terrestrial priority habitats. Many ecologically diverse areas of Fermanagh have already been recognised as being valuable havens for species and so have been designated as ASSI, SAC, SPA, and/or Ramsar. From the vast expanse of Cuilcagh and Marlbank uplands to the wetlands of the Erne system, Fermanagh is certainly a place to behold. It is important to note that it’s not just the wild rural parts of Fermanagh that are important for biodiversity. Even built up populated areas can prove important, with small flourishing pockets of wildlife in gardens, parks and gold courses – so it is crucial not to disregard areas like this when compiling an LBAP.
